Carnival Cart Register

For this project I wanted to create smaller props for my Abandoned Carnival Cart scene. My main focus for this piece was creating an optimized, detailed high to lowpoly baked prop with unique textures that would fit into my other scene as a key asset. The sculpt I created in ZBrush and baked the highpoly model using Marmoset Toolbag. The textures were created in substance 3D Painter and Substance 3D Designer, with the base wood material being the same kind I used in my Cart asset.

The assets were used in collaboration with my other project, Abandoned Carnival Cart - a work heavily inspired by the concept for a Heavenly Candy Cart by the artist Yari Lute. I felt one of the key props in this concept was the register, which is something I invested a lot of time in to make sure I got just right. Initially I made the register a cold silver, however I quickly realised it looked out of place due to the warmer tones of the cart as a whole. Instead I decided to take inspiration from some real life registers I found and gave the base metal a green hue, with a warmer brass for the details and edges. The colours blended much nicer this way and really helped bring my scene and vision to life through the use of different props.

Working on the register was very challenging but also a lot of fun! Creating a model with levers instead of buttons not only helped in making my process quicker, but also created something a bit more unique in comparison to traditional registers. Due to the levers having less visual noise than buttons I was also able to add a lot of details in the textures and sculpt of the model, while keeping it accurate to the concept and style I was going for. I am very happy with the result!
